The client for Casa L approached NON to design a new family home that is practical & functional yet pure and of a simple form architecturally. The house will be located on the clients existing home plot as an additional property. Immediately the process of masterplanning the new property with respect to the form, context and site conditions of the existing architecture and site became the starting point for conceiving the layout and architectural concept.
By block-planning the massing of the building according to the client’s spatial requirements we were able to organize the shape and flow of the house. The overall form of the building is an L shape enclosing the garden inbetween the client’s existing home and new proposal – creating a private open air courtyard that serves as a breather between the buildings and an opportunity to create a visible landscape for both properties.
The main hosting and living spaces are placed along the rear facade with a seamless glass skin that wraps around. Between the hosting and living spaces – pockets of water features break up the facade and introduce views to the landscape. Each space overlooks the landscape and the internal layout is open with the living merging into the dining which then merges into the kitchen.
The same conceptual thought is reflected in the front facade – a more discrete strategy was used to create protrusions where windows are placed perpendicular to the walls. Orientating the views outward more angled and allowing the interior space to have indirect sunlight.
