Taking the concept of ‘Food-Truck Drive Thru’ culture to new heights, NON was approached by Spot – A food truck drive thru operator to refurbish and update an urban park in Khalifa City.
The brief was to include a park, playground, indoor dining hall and different activities for all ages. In addition a circulation study/strategy was requested to be able to pinpoint the entrance/exits points at the right locations based on the internal flow of car drive-thrus.
By segmenting the plot into four different zoning programs; Oasis playground, Spot Courtyard, Urban Park, and Drive-Thru, we were able to define and allocate a design strategy for the entire site. A softscape of gravel and local vegetation inserts are drawn into the existing interlock to create the zones mentioned; these are shaded and lit with low level mood lighting to create an atmosphere at night. At the center of the plot two conjoined L shape buildings within a square insert of gravel create two outdoor spaces for events and outdoor dining. Inside the building can accommodate diners and also has other amenities for staff and short term visitors. The remaining spaces are devoted to a local dog park and a skate park for teenagers, while food trucks are placed around the periphery as a convenient strategy for visitors who wish to remain in their cars.
Tall Washingtonian palm trees are placed on the plot limits to screen the park and make visible the project from a distant. All signages, way marks, graphics were used from the previous brand creation for Spot’s other drive-thru projects.
